We all give in and let our dogs have human food from time to time. I know I do. It’s hard not to! When Hercules gives me that sad look, how can I not give in? And the funny thing about it is he knows exactly which strings to pull! His favorite food is cheese followed by peanut butter.
Though I love to give him some human food, I am very careful about what he gets. Below I have listed 10 human foods that you absolutely need to avoid giving your dog because it could cause major health issues or even death:
Chocolate: Chocolate can hurt your dog because it’s toxic. Dark chocolate is the most dangerous. Chocolate contains theobromine which is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic and is deadly to dogs. If your dog has gotten into it, you need to contact your veterinarian and find out what he or she wants you to do.
Macadamia and all other nuts: Nuts can cause bladder stones because of the high prosperous content.
Macadamia nuts can cause tremors in muscles and paralysis in the hind quarters of a dog. Avoid giving your dog any nuts at all.
Raw Eggs: Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin that can cause hair and skin problems. There is also a chance of Salmonella poisoning.
Milk and Dairy products: Dog’s don’t need milk at all and having it can cause diarrhea. Avoid giving your dog milk at all.
Alcohol: There is no reason your dog should have alcohol at all.
No nutritional value exists, and ingesting alcohol can cause reactions in your dog that can lead to a coma and death.
Grapes and Raisins: Grapes and raisins are extremely deadly to dogs. They can also cause severe kidney damage. If your dog ingests even one grape or raisin, contact your veterinarian immediately!
Tomatoes: The plant, as well as the vegetable itself is highly toxic to your dog. Do not give your dog tomatoes under any circumstance! Doing so can lead to heart arrhythmia and other muscle problems.
Onions: Onions are toxic to dogs. The toxicity is dose dependent, so depending on the size of your dog and depending on how much he ingested, depends on how sick he’ll get. Onion toxicity causes something called Heinz Body Anemia.
Heinz bodies are small bubble-like projections which protrude from the red blood cell and can be seen when the cells are stained. The bubble is a weak spot in the red blood cell. The cell actually ends up with a decreased life span and will rupture prematurely.
Chicken and Turkey Bones: These bones can splinter and cause an obstruction in the dog’s throat and digestive tract. If this happens, immediate surgery is needed. Avoid giving your dog all bones except for raw beef bones.
Raw Fish: Raw fish has been known to cause a thiamine deficiency in dogs in large amounts. This can lead to seizures and death. Don’t give your dog any raw fish!
These ten foods are probably the most important ones you want to avoid giving your dog. There are others of course, and you want to do your research if you have any questions at all. It’s best to contact your veterinarian about any foods in question.
